Today I’m going to talk about my ideas on teaching Unit9 Happy New Year of Oxford English 1A.

First, I’d like to say something about the teaching content and the aims of the lesson.

We know that Oxford English offers ample language input covering a wide range of subjects. The topics are well organized focusing on the students’ world, as well as Unit9 Happy New Year.

The aims of the lesson are:

1. Knowledge of language: Students learn “Happy New Year. Thank you. The words of a card, a doll, a red packet”, and be able to put them into use in situations.

2. Practical skills: Students develop their listening and speaking skills, cooperative skills and communicative skill.

3. Personal development: Students’ sense of cooperation and competition.

Focus:

1. Students’ command of “Happy New Year. Thank you. And the words: a card, a doll, a red packet”.

2. Students’ sustained interest in learning English.

Difficulties to overcome:

Students’ command of “Happy New Year. Thank you. And the word: red packet”.

Second, my way of teaching.

We know that the class should be a student-centered one.

I shall be a guide to encourage student-autonomy and teacher-student interactions. This will help the classroom atmosphere where students can best learn.

The ultimate goal of teaching is not just to familiarize students with knowledge, but to make students aware that they are masters of learning and need to put the language into use. So it is necessary to give them some initial drills. This is to train their communicative skills, which can result in active learners and their full classroom activities.

The class should give full play to the three key roles: the teacher, the students and the textbooks. I believe if this situation can happy, students will be given the best kind of environment for learning.

The lesson should go beyond the textbook boundary. I believe an adequate amount of language input is necessary before the students are able to use the language. Their communicative skills can be achieved only when they have had enough input and when their knowledge of language is put into use. For this reason, there should be a number of extension exercises to make the language happen in an authentic situation.

Teaching English at primary schools aims at students’ basic skills listening, speaking and their interest in English, so I shall try my best to make good use of non-verbal language, such as the empathetic tone, an encouraging look or an exaggerated gesture, to make the students feel at ease in class. CAI (Computer Assisted Instruction), colorful pictures and etc are useful visual aids to draw the students’ attention and involvement. Besides, I shall design some games, nursery rhymes and etc to motivate the students.

Third, I’m going to take the following procedures:

Step1. Warm up

I will begin the lesson with English song “If you are happy” and conversations about the daily life. Such a kind of opening can bring me closer to the students and help set up atmosphere for language learning.

Step2. Presentation and Practice

1. Learn “Happy New Year. Thank you.”

(1) I will play a flash of New Year, letting the students know that New Year is coming. Flash can help students better understand the meaning. And it is helpful in creating the environment for learning and is also helpful in preparing the students for the next step. Then show the picture of Mike and Helen wishing their parents a Happy New Year to arouse students’ curiosity about New Year.

(2) I will play the flash of Part A of this unit. Students look, listen and learn to say “Happy New Year. Thank you” by different ways, such as reading after the teacher, saying it in chorus and individuals, working in pairs and groups and etc until they can say it correctly.

(3) Dub the flash

I will give the students 1 minute to remember the sentences, then ask some of them to dub the flash.

2. Learn “a red packet, a card, a doll”

(1) Present a red packet,

I will ask the students to watch the flash again and pay attention to the thing in Helen’s hand. Students learn to say “a red packet”.

(2) Nursery rhyme: Packet, packet, a red packet.

One for Helen. One for Mike.

(3) Present a card and a toy doll.

Students learn to say the words.

(4) Nursery rhyme: Card, card, a nice card. One for daddy, one for mummy.

Doll, doll, a lovely doll. Doll, doll, I love you.

Step3. Consolidation

(1) T: say the word loud (low),

S: repeat the word louder (lower).

(2) T: Say the word without the sound

S: Look at the teacher’s lips and guess what it is.

(3) TPR: T: Say the word and do a gesture

S: (if fist), boys stand up and say the word.

(if scissors) girls stand up and say the word

(if a hand) boys and girls stand up and say the word.

(4) Group works: T: Name each groups, say the word

Ss: Listen and stand.

(5) T: Show the pictures by CAI

S: Look and say

(6) What’s missing?

(7) Touch and guess

T: Show a box full of different things, such as: book, pencil, banana, toy cat, etc.

S1: Touch. Is this a…?

Ss: Yes/No.

S1: Happy New Year.(If yes), he can take the present away.

Ss: Thank you.

(8) Assessment

Ss will do the exercises of this unit in the workbook.: A Listen and number

C Look and act

Presenting the key sentences and words one by one makes it much easier for Ss to learn the language. Well designed games can help the students interested throughout the class.

CAI is an effective means of creating situations in which the language happens.

Task-based teaching helps Ss develop their communicative and cooperative skills.

All are to encourage Ss’ participation in class, a good teacher-student cooperation and Ss’ efforts to speak in English.

Step4. Assignment

1. As the local people of Zhouzhuang, the N0.1 water town in China. What will you say when you meet foreigners in the street during the New Year’s Day.

2. Listen to the tape, and review the text.

3. Do a survey: What do people usually do on New Year’s Day.

In order to bring out Ss potential for learning, I shall design some kinds of open questions. The assignment encourages Ss to speak more English and to brush up what they have just learned.

Anyway, everything is designed in the light of the “Oxford English concept”: education for students’ personal development. For instance, I will try my best, to do the best.

That’s all.

Thank you.
