Teaching aims

2 learn the new vocabulary about “rules”

3 remember that safety always comes first

Warming-up

Sing a song on p31

Pre-task preparation

1 show a photo of our school gate

ask: Where is it ?

2 ask: How do you go to school every day?

hints: I go to school by______ every day.

I go to school on_____ every day.

Modes of transport:

bus car double-decker motorcycle tricycle

bicycle tram light-rail underground taxi

3 tell students how I go to school every day

(my journey to school)

4 ask students to say something about their journeys to

school

(give them 1 minute to prepare, they can discuss with their deskmates)

5 first tell students: on my way to school, I need to cross 4

roads. Then ask: How about you? Ask them to count.

6 most of us need to cross several roads on our way to school. Ask them to think about how to complete these 2 sentences:

On our way to school, we must be careful when we cross the road.

We should stop at the red lights and walk at the green lights.

7 point at the 2nd sentence and say: this is the thing what we call “rule”. Get the whole class read after me : rule (elicit the topic)

While-task procedure

1 show a photo with traffic lights in

ask : what are they?

Can you see the green man?

Can you cross the road now?

A sentence flies in: Cross the road. Walk quickly.

The whole class read the sentence.

Invite some individual students to read.

ask: Why do we need to walk quickly?

Because the green man will soon change into the red man. (help them to answer)

2 show a photo with the red man in

ask: can you cross the road now?

a sentence flies in: Don’t cross! Wait on the pavement!

(do the same as the above one, ask them to read)

3 show a to students

ask: what does it mean? It means can or can’t, do or don’t? Then add a bus into it, encourage them to guess what it means.

Show a students may know it means the opposite to the former one, it means can/do.

Then put letter “p” into it, ask them what P stands for here, what does this sign mean.

(these Qs are answered with my help)

4 show more pictures to make students familiar with these two kinds of traffic signs

no cars

no motocycles

no bicycles

no lorries

no tricycles

5 show 2 more photos(a little bit difficult)

⑴ what’s this? Is there any traffic?

(a zebra crossing/ cross the road. Walk quickly!)

what does it mean?

Motorcycles can turn right here.(use can here)

⑵ Cars can’t turn right here.

Cars can turn left.

Cars can go straight ahead.

6 listen to the recording: look and read

the 1st time: listen and follow in their books

the 2nd time: listen and repeat

7 what do they mean? Give some simple signs to have a review

8 quick response: it is a game to help students to know the meanings of different kinds of traffic signs. Show cards of signs. Four groups have a contest. Each student can earn a point for his group by answering correctly. (don’t forget give hands to the winner. )

Post-task activity

1 Are they doing the right things?

Show some pictures, let students to judge right or wrong.

(Ask: Can we do this? Answer: can/can’t)

(use and to indicate wrong and right )

2 group work (4 students a group)

Discuss (讨论) the two questions

①How we cross the road ②How we stop at the lights

Each group choose one student to write down what you discuss.

Choose another student to report the result of your discussion.

Give some hints: When and where can we cross the road?

When we cross the road, we can’t…

Before we cross the road, we should(应该)…

Invite several groups to share their ideas with the whole class

3 conclusion

On our way to school

We should cross the road at a zebra crossing.

When we see the green man, we can cross

the road. Walk quickly! We can’t run or play when we cross the road.

When we see the red man,we can’t cross

the road.Stop walking! Wait on the pavement.

Before we cross the road, we should look left, look right, and look left again.

4 Now we have a better understanding of this song,

let’s sing it again! (in chorus)
