中文中很多习语都用数词来表达,比如,七上八下,千篇一律等等,这样的习语数不胜数。

1、(talk,go)nineteen to the dozen 喋喋不休/滔滔不绝

当大部分人使用十二个单词表达含义时,某人用了十九个词,表示讲话滔滔不绝的意思,但选取十九这个数词的原因不得而知。

They talked nineteen to the dozen about all they had done in that time。

他们喋喋不休地谈着那段时间里他们所做过的一切。

2、at sixes and sevens 七上八下/乱七八糟;意见不合

该习语一种较为可信的来源是源于一种掷骰子游戏,five and six表示压较大的点数,后来被改成six and seven,短语的意义也随之发生了改变,由于7是不可能出现的点数,其含义变为“不顾一切冒险做某事”,后来这种不理智的状态引申为“混乱,乱七八糟”的含义。基数词一般不加复数。但此习语中为特例,两个基数词six和seven都用了复数形式。

The boy made the room at sixes and sevens。

这个男孩把房间弄得杂乱无章。

They were at sixes and sevens。

他们各持己见。

3、six of one and half a dozen of the other 半斤八两/不相上下

词短语的字面意思是一打中的六个,和另外一打中的一半。由于一打指十二个,因此这两者是数目相同的,此习语用来比喻不相上下。
